Nigeria Launches Initiative for School Internet Connectivity

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new initiative aimed at connecting schools across the country to reliable internet services, enhancing digital learning. This initiative, launched under the directive of President Bola Tinubu, seeks to expand the nation's digital infrastructure, particularly benefiting the education sector.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the initiative in Abuja, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive framework to ensure internet access at all educational levels, including primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. The initiative builds on previous efforts by the Nigerian Research and Education Network and aims to revive and expand connectivity across the entire education sector.

The government plans to deploy approximately 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic broadband infrastructure and install 3,700 telecommunications towers, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The first phase of the program is expected to show tangible improvements within three months, enabling teachers and students to access digital learning platforms and global academic resources.
