Nigeria Enforces Mandatory Plastic Waste Management for Producers

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced a significant shift in plastic waste management policy, making it legally binding for producers to manage waste associated with their products. This transition from voluntary to mandatory compliance was disclosed by Prof.

Innoc Barikor, the Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), during a stakeholder sensitization program in Owerri. The new regulations will hold plastic producers and import brand owners legally responsible for the entire lifecycle of their products, emphasizing the need for corporate citizenship and strict regulatory compliance.

By 2026, a national environmental regulatory roadmap will be implemented, setting specific annual targets for plastic collection, recovery, and recycling across Nigeria. The initiative aims to enhance Nigeria's global brand reputation, create green jobs, and ensure adherence to international best practices in environmental management.

Stakeholders are urged to intensify coordination and commitment to achieving a cleaner and healthier Nigeria.
