Nigeria Launches Project with GEF to Combat Plastic Pollution

The Nigerian government, represented by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has partnered with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to tackle plastic pollution. The project, titled "Circular Solution to Plastic Pollution," was officially unveiled in Abuja.

It focuses on reducing the environmental impact of single-use water sachets, a widespread issue in Nigeria contributing significantly to plastic pollution. With an annual consumption of 2.5 billion liters of sachet water, Nigeria faces challenges such as clogged drainage systems and ecosystem degradation.

The project, designed around a circular model, emphasizes sustainable water packaging, public-private partnerships, and community water supply systems. GEF's support for the initiative underscores the urgency of adopting innovative solutions to manage plastic waste without compromising access to clean water.

The project aligns with GEF's broader efforts to invest in circular solutions for plastic pollution globally.
