Nigerian Government Acknowledges 2009 Agreement with ASUU, Efforts to End Stalemate

The Nigerian government has acknowledged the existence of an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) dating back to 2009. The Minister of Education clarified that the 2021 draft agreement referred to by ASUU has not been formally executed, reaffirming the 2009 agreement as the last signed document.

Efforts are underway to update the pact, including the establishment of a renegotiation committee. The government aims to end the stalemate with ASUU in a sustainable and constitutionally backed manner to ensure the continuity of teaching and research in universities.
