Nigeria Produces 10,000 T-Shirts in Textile Revival Pilot

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated a program to revitalize the country's cotton, textile, and garment (CTG) industry, aiming to reduce dependence on textile imports. On May 14, 2026, during a stakeholder work session in Abuja, John Owan Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, announced the successful completion of a six-month pilot project that produced 10,000 made-in-Nigeria T-shirts using locally sourced cotton.

The initiative is part of the National Cotton, Textile, and Garment Industry Transformation Program (NCTG ITP), which seeks to transform the local industry into a competitive global player. The program emphasizes the need for a coordinated approach across the value chain, stronger policy frameworks, and strategic partnerships to support farmers and manufacturers.

Chris Osa Isokpunwu, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry, noted the potential for the CTG sector to generate 1.5 million jobs, particularly for women and youth. The Bank of Agriculture has pledged support for the sector's revival.
