Nigeria Launches Nationwide Food Bank Program Initiative

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated steps to launch a nationwide food bank program, as disclosed in a statement on April 12, 2026, by the Federal Ministry of Health. A committee has been established to oversee the implementation of this food support initiative across the country.

During the inaugural meeting held in Abuja, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, urged committee members to focus on executing the program effectively to ensure it delivers real impact for vulnerable Nigerians. The initiative, championed by Oluremi Tinubu, aims to address malnutrition and strengthen food and nutrition support systems at the community level across all 774 local government areas.

The committee comprises representatives from various government ministries, including those responsible for humanitarian affairs, agriculture, women affairs, and health. The program is expected to provide oversight and ensure coordination among stakeholders while tracking the progress of its nationwide implementation, which is scheduled to officially commence in Borno later in April 2026.
