Nigeria's Education Minister Alausa Links Skills to Global Jobs

The Federal Government of Nigeria is taking steps to connect the country's education system with the international labor market, as stated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON. Speaking at the Hire From Nigeria event during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Alausa emphasized the need for Nigeria to produce workers equipped for emerging global employment opportunities.

He highlighted the potential of Nigeria's youthful population, English proficiency, cultural adaptability, and growing digital skills to contribute to the global outsourcing and digitally enabled services market. Alausa pointed out challenges such as the mismatch between training and industry needs, inadequate work-based learning, and limited access to internationally recognized certifications.

To address these issues, the ministry is implementing curriculum reforms, enhancing accreditation and quality assurance, and expanding digital and technical training programs. The minister also noted that over one million applications have been received for the Federal Government's free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program, which has supported 160,000 trainees across approximately 1,200 centers nationwide.
