Nigerian Government Strengthens Policy on Drought and Desertification

The Nigerian government is intensifying efforts to address drought, desertification, and land degradation by updating the national policy framework. Malam Balarab Lawal of the Ministry of Environment emphasized the severity of these environmental challenges, impacting agriculture, water security, and livelihoods, especially in arid regions of Nigeria.

The ongoing policy review, initiated in July 2025, aims to incorporate practical and inclusive strategies with clear monitoring mechanisms. Stakeholders are encouraged to contribute to the policy revision to enhance Nigeria's environmental and climate resilience.
