Nigeria and Niger Basin Authority Boost Climate Financing Efforts

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) have committed to enhancing regional cooperation and developing sustainable financing mechanisms to tackle climate change, water security, and livelihood challenges in the Niger Basin. This commitment was announced in Abuja during the Regional Workshop for the Validation of the Study Report on the In-depth Financial Analysis for the Implementation of the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Fund in the Niger Basin (RCCAF/NB).
H.E. Kocou Armand Houanye, Executive Secretary of the NBA, emphasized the importance of the RCCAF/NB for securing sustainable financing for climate adaptation and ecosystem protection.
He noted that the Niger Basin, which supports over 200 million people across nine countries, has significant development potential, including nearly five million hectares for hydro-agricultural development and an estimated 200 billion cubic meters of water. The RCCAF/NB was established with support from the African Development Bank Group to provide a financing platform for climate adaptation.
Significant progress has been made, including the validation of the feasibility study and the approval of legal texts by the NBA Council of Ministers.
