Nigeria's Akume Announces $337 Billion Climate Action Plan

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that approximately $337 billion is needed to fulfill its climate action commitments between 2026 and 2035. Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the importance of adequate financing, institutional capacity, and coordinated action during the launch of Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 (NDC 3.0) in Abuja.
The funding requirement includes $195 billion for mitigation and $141.5 billion for adaptation. The NDC 3.0 aims for a 32 percent reduction in emissions by 2035, relative to a 2018 baseline, as part of Nigeria's goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
Akume called for integration of climate considerations across government policies and urged collaboration from state governments, private sectors, and civil society. The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Omotenioye Majekodunmi, noted that the NDC 3.0 was developed through a multi-stakeholder process and should be viewed as a national development instrument.
