CSOs Urge Political Will to Free Local Governments from Governors' Control

Nigerian Civil Society Organizations are urging the Federal Government to demonstrate political will in freeing local governments from the control of state governors. This call was made during a workshop in Umuahia, Abia State, to enhance the capacity of local government workers for transparent and efficient grassroots administration.

The CSOs highlighted the need to implement the Supreme Court judgment declaring the confiscation of council funds by governors as illegal. They emphasized the importance of restoring full autonomy to local governments by amending the 1999 Constitution to abolish the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) and empower INEC to conduct local government elections.
