FG Investigates Marginalization of Indigenous Barge Operators

The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed the Nigerian Shipper Council (NSC) to commence an investigation into allegations of systemic efforts to undermine indigenous barge operators at the nation's seaports. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr.

Adegboyega Oyetola, issued this directive, emphasizing the need for stakeholder engagement to review sector performance by the first quarter of 2026. The investigation follows claims that certain foreign interests are being favored, creating an uneven playing field that threatens the survival of local businesses.

Dr. Oyetola expressed concern over policies that disadvantage Nigerian businesses and reiterated the government's commitment to protecting local investments and ensuring fair competition within the maritime industry.

He highlighted the importance of identifying sector challenges and shaping policy interventions to strengthen the marine blue economy, which is crucial for national growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
