FG Investigates Marginalization of Local Barge Operators

The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed the Nigerian Shipper Council (NSC) to investigate allegations of marginalization of local barge operators within the country's maritime industry. This initiative aims to address concerns raised by local operators who claim they are being unfairly treated and excluded from participating in the industry.

The situation has raised alarms about its potential impact on Nigeria's economy and the livelihoods of those employed in the industry. Local barge operators allege that foreign interests are pushing business at Apapa Port, specifically accusing major terminal operators of denying them access to berth windows in favor of foreign shipping firms.

The investigation was prompted during a senior management retreat held in Lagos, where Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, emphasized the need to address these allegations.

The local operators expressed concerns about policies that create bottlenecks and preferential treatment for foreign-linked entities, which they believe disrupts competition and threatens the survival of indigenous businesses.
