Nigeria Launches National Skills Database to Combat Unemployment

On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled a plan to establish a national skills database as part of efforts to reduce unemployment and address the growing mismatch between available skills and industry needs. The initiative is expected to develop the Nigerian Skill Observatory, which will provide real-time information on the supply and demand for skills across various sectors, enabling better job matching and improved policy formulation.

Yemi Kale, Group Chief Economist and Managing Director of Research at Afreximbank, emphasized the challenges in Nigeria's labor market, noting the fragmentation of existing data and the need for integrated intelligence to inform actions. Despite producing thousands of graduates annually, critical sectors struggle to recruit qualified workers, leaving millions unemployed or underemployed.

Rimam Nuhu, Chair of the National Council on Skills, highlighted that the database will help identify skill shortages and improve workforce planning. The initiative aims to align education and skill development with industry needs, ultimately contributing to economic productivity.
