Joseph Tegbe Prioritizes Power Reforms, No Tariff Hike

On September 22, the Federal Government, through Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, announced a focus on power sector reforms without increasing electricity tariffs. During a media parley in Abuja, marking his first 100 days in office, Tegbe highlighted the interconnected challenges within the electricity value chain, which affect supply and burden consumers.

He emphasized that the administration is addressing issues such as long-standing debt, revenue leakages, metering gaps, and infrastructure constraints. Tegbe noted that gas supply to power plants is hindered by damaged pipelines and discouraging commercial conditions.

He reported that generation companies receive only 27 percent of their bills, which undermines their operations. The minister's four promises to Nigerians include a disciplined approach to sector problems, pursuing grid stability, and ensuring visible improvements.

He also pointed out that transmission infrastructure faces pressures from vandalism and that distribution companies experience significant losses due to inadequate metering and weak payment discipline.
