Minister Tegbe Assures No Electricity Tariff Increase

Adebayo Tegbe, the Minister of Power, stated there are no plans to increase electricity tariffs during a briefing in Abuja on his first 100 days in office. He emphasized that the administration of President Bola Tinubu aims to stabilize the electricity value chain and strengthen governance rather than impose higher costs on consumers.

Tegbe, who took office on June 8, identified various constraints in the power sector, including limited gas supply due to damaged pipelines and a generation fleet reliant on aging thermal plants. He reported that only 27% of generation companies' bills were being paid, affecting maintenance and gas supplier payments.

Improvements noted during his tenure include the restoration of the 375 MW Alaoji plant, upgrades to substations in Lagos unlocking 672 MW, and a new 300 MVA transformer in Abuja adding 240 MW. Generation and transmission have risen above 5,000 MW, with a peak of 5,330 MW in recent months.

Additionally, 350,000 meters were installed, and N1.23 trillion has been raised to address the N3.3 trillion legacy debt in the sector.
