Nigeria Halts New Digital Regulations for Unified Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to the implementation and enforcement of recently introduced regulations affecting internet platforms and online intermediaries. This decision was communicated by Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, during a high-level meeting involving leadership from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The minister instructed these agencies to suspend enforcement of the regulatory instruments as part of an ongoing inter-agency harmonization process. Tijani emphasized that this move does not undermine the legal mandates of the regulatory bodies involved and that existing guidelines will remain in effect.

The creation of a joint technical coordinating committee was announced to oversee stakeholder engagement and develop recommendations for a unified national government policy framework for the digital sector. This framework aims to clarify responsibilities, minimize regulatory overlap, and strengthen investor confidence in Nigeria's digital economy.
