Federal Government Acts on Calabar Erosion Threats

The Federal Government has launched an emergency response to a severe erosion crisis in Calabar, Cross River State, which poses risks to critical military and energy infrastructure, including the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory and a Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) jetty. This erosion is exacerbated by the collapse of the Channel 2 underground drainage network along Anansa Road.

The intervention is being coordinated by the Ecological Project Office (EPO) in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Environment. Dr. Aishetu Mohammed, the Permanent Secretary of the EPO, stated that a comprehensive technical assessment will be conducted to identify the causes of the disaster and design sustainable solutions.

The response will also involve consultations with naval authorities to mitigate impacts on maritime operations. The EPO plans to incorporate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to support data-driven decision-making and will address the needs of local communities affected by the erosion.
