Flooding Crisis in Calabar's Peaceland Community

Residents of the Peaceland community in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, are experiencing life-threatening flooding as a large ravine continues to consume homes. Many residents have abandoned their properties, with some relocating to safer areas.

Mrs. Ekanem Inyang, a widow and mother of three, expressed her despair, stating her house is now dangerously close to the ravine, which was left to her by her late husband who died in 2018. Community leader Johnson Eteng reported that residents have witnessed helplessly as the ravine has swallowed several homes, prompting landlords and tenants to flee.

Despite community efforts to mitigate the erosion by planting bamboo and using discarded trailer tires, these measures have proven ineffective against the powerful water force. Another resident, Patrick Okon, warned that if the current rainfall persists, more houses could be lost in the coming weeks.

The community is urgently seeking government assistance to address the ongoing crisis.
