Nigeria Targets Cervical Cancer Elimination by 2030

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through Dr. Iziak Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, reaffirmed its commitment to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2030.

This commitment includes expanding HPV vaccination, improving screening services, and strengthening treatment capacity. During an international webinar titled "Accelerating Cervical Cancer Elimination Toward 2030 Agenda: Myths and Realities," Salako noted that Nigeria records approximately 13,676 new cases of cervical cancer annually.

The government aims to achieve the World Health Organization's targets of 90% HPV vaccination, 70% screening, and 90% treatment. A nationwide single-dose HPV immunization program was introduced in 2023, targeting 17 million girls aged 9-14.

The government plans to enhance primary healthcare screening and strengthen referral systems. The National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination will coordinate nationwide efforts to ensure Nigeria meets its 2030 elimination target, with support from international partners like Gavi, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
