Nigeria Enhances Global Partnerships for Cancer Control

On August 11, 2026, in Abuja, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships in cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. This initiative is part of the National Cancer Control Plan 2026–2030.

Salako highlighted the severe burden of cancer in Africa due to factors like late presentation and limited resources. The government has begun constructing six cancer centers of excellence, with three completed and three underway.

Additionally, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the procurement of 35 linear accelerators from 2027 to 2029 to enhance radiotherapy services. Salako emphasized the importance of international collaboration and expertise in achieving sustainable cancer control outcomes, including the integration of HPV vaccination into routine immunization and improving public awareness and screening services.

He expressed gratitude to the Global Advisory Council and the Technical Working Group for their support in enhancing Nigeria's cancer diagnostic capabilities.
