Nigeria's Federal Government Advances Maternal Health Initiatives

The Federal Government of Nigeria has achieved significant progress in maternal and newborn health, primary healthcare delivery, health insurance coverage, and local manufacturing of essential health products under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. This progress is part of the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which is based on the December 2023 Health Sector Renewal Compact with State Governments and expanded through a 2025 addendum.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance the health system and advance universal health coverage. The Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) has focused on 172 local government areas with high maternal mortality rates, resulting in a 22 per cent decline in case fatality from 2024 to August 2026.
Approximately 750,000 women accessed antenatal care in priority areas in the past year. The National Health Insurance Authority has also expanded emergency obstetric and newborn care, reaching over 93,000 women and newborns by August 2026.
Additionally, 3,526 primary healthcare centres have been revitalised, with ₦249.5 billion disbursed through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund.
