Nigeria Rejects U.S. Claims of Religious Persecution

The Nigerian government, through Minister Mohammed Idris, has rejected the stance of U.S. congressmen regarding allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria. This response followed a report submitted to President Donald Trump by members of the House Committee on Appropriations, led by Chairman Tom Cole, which investigated claims of persecution against Christians amid broader extremist violence.

Idris clarified that there is no government policy encouraging religious persecution and reiterated that the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria affects all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations. He emphasized the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion and the federal government's commitment to uphold this principle.

The U.S. officials maintain their position on the issue, but Nigeria remains focused on engaging in constructive dialogue with international partners to address security challenges. The government expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and property due to criminal acts and affirmed its dedication to protecting all Nigerians.
