Nigeria's Malaria Prevalence Drops to 15% with New Plans

The Federal Government of Nigeria has committed to accelerating malaria elimination by introducing Perennial Malaria Chemoprevention (PMC) as a strategic intervention for children under two years in areas with year-round malaria transmission. Dr.

Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced this initiative during the PMC Dissemination Meeting on Wednesday, 5th August 2026, in Abuja. He described the meeting as a significant milestone in Nigeria's malaria elimination efforts, highlighting the importance of evidence-based solutions.

The PMC initiative, which began in 2023, aims to protect children under 24 months in regions with perennial malaria transmission and aligns with World Health Organization recommendations. Dr.

Salako noted that malaria prevalence in Nigeria has dropped from 42% in 2010 to 15% in 2025, although Nigeria still accounts for 24.3% of global malaria cases and 30.3% of malaria-related deaths. The Ministry will continue to implement the National Malaria Strategic Plan (2026–2030) to improve health outcomes.
