Nigeria Seeks Private Investment for Climate Adaptation Plan

The Nigerian government, through the Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has called for private investment to effectively implement the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) during a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Salihu Aminu Usman, Lawal emphasized that the NAP requires innovative financing, technology transfer, and sustained investment to address climate risks and reduce vulnerability.

The NAP prioritizes critical sectors such as agriculture, water resources, health, infrastructure, energy, biodiversity, forestry, disaster management, and human settlements. Lawal stated that successful implementation necessitates collaboration with the private sector, which plays a vital role in developing climate-resilient technologies and mobilizing investments.

He also mentioned that adaptation is increasingly viewed as a business imperative. The government has introduced several initiatives, including the Climate Change Act and the Energy Transition Plan, to drive climate action.

Sharon Dimanche, Chief of Mission of the International Organisation for Migration, represented by Hajara Jalo, reaffirmed the organization's commitment to supporting Nigeria in implementing the NAP.
