Nigeria Advocates for Climate Finance at COP31

Ahead of the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Nigeria is pushing for enhanced climate finance and adaptation support. Minister of Environment Balarab Abba Lawal stated that developing countries require concrete support to effectively address the growing impacts of climate change.

He emphasized Nigeria's commitment to the Paris Agreement and its ambitious climate action aligned with national development priorities. Lawal noted that Nigeria has strengthened its climate governance framework by enacting a Climate Change Act, which provides a legal foundation for coordinating the implementation of climate policies across the country.

He outlined several priority areas for government attention, including renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable transport. Lawal urged the international community at COP31 to deliver practical support for developing countries rather than imposing new obligations without adequate financing and technology transfer.

He also advocated for stronger South-South cooperation among D-8 member states to advance sustainable development and climate resilience.
