FG Warns Content Creators Over Privacy Violations

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has issued a statement warning content creators about potential sanctions for violating citizens' privacy rights. This follows concerns raised about a reality show filmed in Lagos State that captured unsuspecting individuals without their consent.

The NDPC, led by Babatunde Bamigboye, highlighted that such actions infringe on the rights guaranteed under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023. The commission's preliminary investigation revealed that the unauthorized sharing of images could harm individuals and violate their privacy.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, CEO of the NDPC, directed social media platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) to enforce community guidelines to prevent such violations.

The NDPC warned that failure to address these issues promptly could lead to appropriate sanctions under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, holding content creators accountable for any breaches of privacy rights.
