FG Shuts Down Over 13m Social Media Accounts Over Offensive Content

The Federal Government has closed down more than 13 million social media accounts due to offensive content violations. The shutdown was in line with the Code of Practice for social media platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.

The compliance report for 2024 was submitted by major interactive computer service platforms like Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, confirmed the figure and praised the platforms for their continued compliance.

This action reflects the commitment of these platforms to ensuring a safe and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users, in accordance with the Code of Practice and relevant laws. Collaboration among stakeholders is essential to maintain user safety, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust in Nigeria's digital ecosystem.
