BREAKING: FG shuts down over 13 million social media accounts, gives reasons

The Federal Government has announced the shutdown of over 13 million social media accounts due to offensive content violations. This action was taken in compliance with the Code of Practice across various platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

The 2024 Compliance Report, submitted by major interactive computer service platforms like Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, highlighted the removal of offensive posts from different platforms within a year. The Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, confirmed the figure and commended the platforms for their continued compliance with the Nigerian Code of Practice.

This move is seen as a significant step towards creating a safer and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to enhance user safety measures and promote trust and transparency in the digital ecosystem.
