Falana Critiques FG's Proposed Electricity Tariff Hike

Femi Falana, a senior advocate, criticized the Federal Government's plans to increase electricity tariffs, stating that Nigerians should not suffer due to the government's recurring failures in the power sector. Speaking in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Falana emphasized that the government must first deliver stable and uninterrupted electricity, a promise made by President Bola Tinubu during his campaign.

He argued that it is unjust to ask citizens to pay more for unreliable service and pointed out that the privatization of the power sector has not led to improved efficiency or service delivery. Falana also expressed concern that the proposed tariff hike would further burden households and businesses already facing high living costs.

He called for stronger regulatory frameworks to hold electricity distribution companies accountable and suggested that if these firms cannot meet expectations, the government should either ensure their effective operation or consider nationalization. Falana urged the government to focus on reforms that enhance electricity generation, transmission, and distribution rather than imposing additional financial burdens on consumers.
