FG Denies Plans to Increase Electricity Tariffs for Consumers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially dismissed reports regarding an impending increase in electricity tariffs for grid consumers. Sadiq Wanka, the Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, clarified that there are no plans to hike tariffs for any consumer category.

His comments, made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0 event in Lagos on July 22, 2026, were misrepresented by media reports. Wanka reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting vulnerable households through ongoing tariff support and emphasized the importance of the National Integrated Electricity Policy, finalized in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025.

He stated that subsidies will remain for consumer categories other than 'Band A' and highlighted the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF) as a mechanism for delivering targeted subsidies. The government also acknowledged the media's role in public communication and expressed appreciation for their support.
