Nigeria Seeks Urgent Solutions for Climate Change Impacts

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through Minister of Environment Balarab Abba Lawal, has called for urgent solutions to the impacts of climate change, which are resulting in unprecedented extreme weather conditions globally. This announcement was made during a three-day forum held in Abuja, where the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Salihu Aminu Usman, represented the minister.

Nigeria has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and is focusing on mitigation while also developing adaptation strategies aligned with the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), which is nearing completion. The forum, co-hosted by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the NAP Global Network, brought together representatives from several conflict-affected nations.

Minister Lawal highlighted the importance of addressing the intersection of climate change and conflict, emphasizing that adaptation strategies must be conflict-sensitive and promote peacebuilding. Dr. Mr. Inionong Abiola also noted the rising impacts of climate change on Nigeria, stressing the need for comprehensive adaptation plans that involve transparent participation and resource allocation.
