Nigerian Government Spends ₦38.1 Billion on Former Leaders' Welfare Over 22 Years

The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated a total of ₦38.1 billion for the welfare of former presidents, vice presidents, and their families from 2005 to 2026. The annual expenditure has varied, with the highest recorded in 2012 at ₦3.185 billion.

Beneficiaries include prominent figures like Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan, and others. The allocation covers pension, statutory benefits, and applies to both civilian and military former leaders.

The proposed 2026 budget includes a provision of ₦2.3 billion for these benefits.
