FG Suspends WAEC, NECO Fee Increase for 2027

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the suspension of the proposed increase in registration fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) for the year 2027. This decision was communicated by the Federal Ministry of Education, specifically through a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Dr.

Maruf Tunji Alausa, on Monday. The proposal to adjust the examination registration fees was initially conveyed in a letter dated June 18, 2026, but has now been withdrawn to facilitate a comprehensive review and broader consultations with stakeholders in the education sector.

The ministry acknowledged the public's concerns regarding the fee increase and emphasized the need for careful consideration of policies affecting millions of students and their families. The ministry reassured that the examination registration charges have remained largely unchanged for several years despite rising operational costs associated with conducting credible public examinations.
