FG Suspends WAEC, NECO Fee Review for Consultations

The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria announced the suspension of the proposed review of registration fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO). This decision, communicated in a letter dated June 18, 2026, allows for a comprehensive review and broader consultations with relevant stakeholders before a final decision is made.

The ministry acknowledged the concerns and constructive feedback received from the public, emphasizing the importance of considering the social responsibility of the proposed fee adjustments. The current examination registration fees have remained largely unchanged for several years despite significant increases in operational costs, including logistics, security, and technology deployment.

Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, reaffirmed the commitment of the federal government to inclusivity and transparency in policymaking, ensuring that future decisions reflect the collective interests of the nation.

The ministry will engage extensively with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, and other stakeholders throughout the consultation process.
