FG Suspends WAEC, NECO Fee Hike Amid Public Concerns

The Federal Ministry of Education announced the suspension of a planned fee increase for WAEC and NECO examinations, as stated in a letter dated June 18, 2026. The proposal for the fee adjustment was intended to address rising operational costs associated with conducting credible national examinations.

Despite the necessity for a fee increase, the ministry acknowledged that registration fees have remained largely unchanged for several years, despite rising expenses. Dr.

Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasized that the decision to suspend the fee hike reflects the federal government's commitment to inclusive and transparent policymaking. The ministry will engage in a fresh review process involving extensive consultations with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parent associations, and relevant stakeholders.

The proposed increase in examination registration fees will not take effect until the consultation process is concluded, ensuring that student welfare and equitable access to quality education remain central to the educational agenda of President Bola Tinubu's administration.
