Nigerian Government to Deploy Military Veterans to Secure Ungoverned Spaces

The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed a plan to deploy military veterans to secure the country's ungoverned spaces, aiming to strengthen national security and stimulate economic activities in conflict-affected areas. This initiative was announced following the inauguration of an 18-member high-powered committee by the Ministry of Defence.

The committee, led by Gen. Musa (retd.), is tasked with reclaiming ungoverned spaces for economic viability.

The plan involves deploying veterans to complement ongoing military operations, leveraging their experience to enhance local security and community development efforts, especially in areas where state presence is weak. The strategy emphasizes a shift away from reliance on offensive military actions towards a more inclusive and sustainable approach to address the underlying socio-economic drivers of insecurity.

The committee's key mandates include repositioning veterans to support national economic development, deploying veterans to secure ungoverned spaces, and strengthening the operations of the Nigerian Legion Corps Commissionaire to facilitate veteran reintegration and promote their contributions to national security.
