Nigeria Launches Mobile Teams to Combat Irregular Migration

The Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated mobile teams on Tuesday to address irregular migration and transnational crimes as part of the Nigeria Project. This initiative, backed by the Migration Partnership Programme with the Netherlands, aims to implement international migration policies developed by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

The project establishes a steering committee headquartered at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Abuja. Kemi Nanna Nandap, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, emphasized that traditional policing methods are insufficient to tackle the country's border security challenges.

With Nigeria sharing a 4,000-kilometer land border and an 853-kilometer coastline, the mobile teams are designed as flexible elite units equipped with modern technology to penetrate high-risk and difficult terrains. This project is expected to enhance the country's border security and curb irregular migration while supporting international partners.
