Nigeria to Reopen Kebbi Border with Benin Republic to Boost Trade

The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idri, has announced the decision to reopen the Tsamiya land border with Benin Republic to facilitate cross-border trade. The move comes after consultations with various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Customs Service and security agencies, to address security concerns.

The reopening aims to enhance legal trade activities while preventing criminal exploitation of the border corridor. The Customs Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, emphasized the need for clear security protocols to safeguard national interests.

The Nigerian Customs Service has deployed ICT-based systems to monitor and streamline trade operations with Benin Republic. The reopening is expected to support President Bola Tinubu's economic diversification agenda and boost GDP through increased international trade.

Isa Aliyu of the Onion Producers Association highlighted the economic impact of the border closure on onion farmers and traders, emphasizing the need for a swift resumption of legal trade activities.
