Nigeria Develops QR Certification for Halal Exports

The Federal Government of Nigeria is creating a national Halal framework that will implement a Quick Response (QR)-based certification system for Nigerian products, aimed at improving traceability and facilitating access to international markets. Mr Aliyu Sheriff, the Special Assistant to the President on Export Expansion and Secretary of the Nigeria Halal Economy Strategy Implementation Committee, made this announcement during an interview at the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2026 in Kuala Lumpur.

The new framework will set standards for certification, accreditation, and traceability, allowing international buyers to verify the source and compliance of Nigerian products. Sheriff emphasized the need for a credible Halal certification structure to enhance Nigeria's competitiveness in the global market.

The government’s strategy encompasses four pillars: Islamic finance, Halal compliance, market access, and capacity development. Additionally, Nigeria aims to learn from established Halal ecosystems in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia while strengthening the capacity of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to meet international standards.
