Nigeria Launches Strategy to Boost Midwifery Workforce

The Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled a strategy titled "Nigeria Strategic Direction for Midwifery 2025-2030" in Abuja, aimed at addressing an estimated shortage of 30,000 midwives and curbing the country's high maternal and infant mortality rates. The initiative was announced by Ado Bako, Assistant Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Health, during an event coordinated by Prof.

Ali Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. The strategy focuses on expanding training institutions, increasing student intake, and modernizing midwifery education to meet global standards.

Dr. Abisola Adegok emphasized the need for a competent midwifery workforce to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.

Dr. Ndagi Alhassan from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria warned of the urgent need for investment in workforce development and quality education to reverse the trend of high maternal deaths.

Haruna Mamman, President of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, attributed the midwifery deficit to underfunded training programs and inadequate support systems.
