Experts Urge Phased Ban on Solar Imports Amid Crisis

The Federal Government of Nigeria is being urged to reconsider an immediate ban on solar panel imports amid the ongoing energy crisis. Stakeholders in Nigeria's energy sector, including energy expert Joseph Ibrahim, caution that such a move could exacerbate the country's already critical electricity deficit.

Currently, Nigeria generates approximately 5,000 megawatts of electricity, translating to about 24.5 watts per person, which is insufficient for basic needs, leaving around 85 million Nigerians without access to electricity. Ibrahim emphasizes the importance of establishing a viable local manufacturing base for solar panels before implementing any restrictions on imports.

He argues that the energy sector is a fundamental driver of economic growth and that without a stable policy, financial framework, and quality control systems, local production cannot be forced to grow overnight. The call for a phased approach reflects the need for infrastructure and capacity building in Nigeria's renewable energy sector.
