NIDCOM Warns Nigerians in South Africa Amid Protests

The Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), represented by Michael Olugbod, has issued a strong advisory urging Nigerian residents in South Africa to exercise caution due to a surge in violent anti-foreigner protests across various regions, including East London, Cape Town, and Durban. The advisory follows reports from the Nigerian Consul General in Johannesburg, which indicated that violence has escalated, resulting in looting and property destruction.

The advisory, dated April 22, warns of expected further protests in Gauteng Province from April 27 to 29. NIDCOM has advised Nigerians to avoid protest areas and remain law-abiding during this period of unrest.

Nigerian business owners are specifically cautioned to consider shutting down operations, as foreign-owned businesses are often prime targets during disturbances. The commission reaffirmed its support for the Nigerian Consul General, Ninikanwa Okei Uch, who is working closely with South African security agencies to ensure the safety of Nigerians.

Additionally, Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, is engaging with South African diplomats to address the situation.
