FG and World Bank Launch Water Resource Management Plan

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the World Bank, has unveiled a strategic plan to address the shrinking water bodies in Nigeria. This initiative, presented at a workshop, includes nine strategies focused on catchment management aimed at strengthening and sustaining water resource management, restoring degraded landscapes, and improving climate resilience across various states.

Chuka Ofodil, Managing Director of Mecon Engineering Services Ltd, explained that catchments represent natural watershed boundaries, which are crucial for developing water resources. The plan emphasizes the importance of local ownership and community involvement in project implementation.

Balarab Lawal, the Minister of Environment, highlighted the environmental pressures faced by communities in the northern region, which threaten livelihoods and food security. The initiative aims to receive support from federal and state governments to ensure sustainability and effectiveness over time.
