Nigeria and World Bank Launch Initiative for Water Bodies

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched a new initiative aimed at tackling the growing problem of shrinking water bodies across Nigeria. This initiative was unveiled during a workshop held in Abuja, where nine strategic catchment management plans were presented.

Mr. Balarab Abba Lawal, the Minister of Environment, stated that the project aims to restore degraded landscapes, improve water management, and enhance climate resilience, particularly in northern Nigeria, which is increasingly affected by desertification and declining water sources. The plan is designed to guide sustainable watershed management, promote climate-smart agriculture, and support the livelihoods of communities dependent on water resources.

Government officials indicated that the program, supported by the World Bank, is expected to drive long-term environmental restoration and help secure water resources for affected communities.
