FG Warns Against Accreditation Process Abuse in Education

On 15 September 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, issued a stern warning to heads of tertiary institutions regarding the integrity of the accreditation process. This warning was delivered during the inauguration of the Ministerial Committee aimed at strengthening the Accreditation and Quality Assurance System of Tertiary Institutions in Abuja, which will be chaired by Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the former registrar of JAMB.

Alausa stated that any officials found abusing the accreditation process would face job loss, and private institutions involved would have their licenses revoked. He emphasized that the quality of graduates must align with standards set by regulatory bodies.

The minister's warning follows a controversy involving Atiba University in Oyo State, which faced a 10-year moratorium on its law program due to inadequate facilities and unauthorized admissions. Alausa condemned practices such as borrowing academic staff and equipment to meet accreditation requirements, labeling them as academic fraud.
