NCC Warns Fibre Cuts Threaten Telecom Network Expansion

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported significant progress in Nigeria's telecommunications sector, with operators deploying 8,526 out of 12,179 additional coverage and capacity sites, representing approximately 70% of their commitments. This increase from roughly 5,000 sites reported previously indicates an accelerated rollout aimed at enhancing network capacity and subscriber experience.

However, the NCC warns that persistent damage to fibre-optic infrastructure, particularly from over 5,000 recorded fibre-cut incidents in the first half of 2026, poses a major threat to service reliability. The NCC identified road construction and excavation as primary causes of these disruptions.

At its 110th Board meeting on September 9, 2026, the commission emphasized the need for better coordination among telecommunications operators, road contractors, and government agencies to protect fibre routes. Dr Aminu Maida, NCC Executive Vice Chairman, highlighted the critical nature of telecommunications infrastructure for various sectors, linking its protection to national security.
