NCC Reports 70% Network Expansion Progress in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced that telecommunications operators in Nigeria have successfully deployed 8,526 out of 12,179 additional coverage and capacity sites, representing approximately 70% of their commitment to improve network coverage, capacity, and quality of service across the country. This progress was noted during the NCC Governing Board's 110th meeting on September 9, 2026, where the previous figure of approximately 5,000 sites was also mentioned.

Despite this advancement, the Board expressed concerns over a significant increase in network disruptions recorded in June, attributing some issues to fibre cuts. The Board emphasized the need for stronger protection of critical communications infrastructure and called for ongoing investment in network resilience.

Additionally, the NCC introduced the Device Management System (DMS) to enhance compliance with device regulations and combat mobile device theft, with the system now live. The Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS) is expected to launch in October 2026, aimed at improving governance of telecommunications identities.
