FIFA Defends Referee Amid Trump’s Criticism of Officiating

FIFA has publicly supported referee Raphael Claus amidst criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who questioned the integrity of Claus's officiating after a controversial red card was issued to U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during a match.

Trump suggested that Claus's decisions were suspect and called for FIFA to review the officiating. In response, FIFA reaffirmed its confidence in Claus, stating he has demonstrated the highest standards of professional integrity throughout his career.

FIFA Chief Referee Officer Pierluigi Collina emphasized that Claus is a highly respected member of the World Cup refereeing pool and has officiated at two FIFA World Cups, including the ongoing tournament in Qatar. Following the controversy, FIFA announced that Balogun would be allowed to play in the upcoming last 16 clash against Belgium, despite the criticisms surrounding the officiating.
