Paredes Faces Uncertain Future After FIFA Suspension

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has expressed uncertainty regarding his future with the national team after receiving a 10-match suspension from FIFA. The ban was imposed due to Paredes' involvement in a confrontation with Spain players following Argentina's 1-0 loss in the 2026 World Cup final, where he grabbed defender Eric Garcia by the throat and wrestled Gavi to the ground, reportedly striking Gavi in the face.

Paredes, who plays for Boca Juniors, stated that the suspension complicates his ability to continue with the national team as before. He mentioned Lionel Messi's recent retirement from international football as another factor influencing his decision, stating, “Because of the suspension as well as Leo’s decision, it’s going to be difficult for everything to carry on as before.” Paredes has yet to discuss his situation with Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni.

Messi, who recently announced his retirement, leaves as Argentina’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, having scored 125 goals in 207 appearances.
